Austal USA earns three industry safety awards

Mobile, Ala. – Austal USA’s safety-minded workforce earned three industry safety awards this year further cementing the company’s superior safety reputation.  Austal USA has been recognized by America Equity Underwriters (AEU) with the 2023 AEU Safety Award and by the Shipbuilder’s Council of America (SCA) with SCA’s 2023 Excellence in Safety and Improvement in Safety awards. These three awards bring Austal USA’s total safety award count to 27 in 15 years.

“Employee safety is and always has been the top priority at Austal USA,” company president Michelle Kruger said. “Our workforce’s constant dedication to each other’s safety and well-being has resulted in this hard-earned but well-deserved recognition.”

SCA’s Excellence in Safety award is based on Austal’s commitment to safety by maintaining a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) that is well below the SCA members’ average. The company’s shipbuilding team was also recognized for improvement in safety due to the reduction in incident rates by over 10% from last year.

Austal USA is one of only 35 of AEU’s 1,800 waterfront employer customers being honored for safety.

“Because of Austal USA’s performance, management involvement, and industry leading safety program, Austal USA has once again earned the AEU Safety Award,” stated AEU Senior Vice President, Director of Loss Control James “Jimmy” Burgin. “We are so proud to have companies like Austal USA that have strong commitment to safety as a member of the American Longshore Mutual Association, Ltd. (ALMA).  Congratulations on being a safety award winner! “

Austal USA has 13 programs under contract, and eight vessels under construction at the company’s Mobile, Ala. state-of-the-art ship manufacturing facility.  The increase in new construction work coupled with the ongoing service work at Austal USA’s global service and repair facilities has resulted in an even greater focus on safety to ensure the company maintains its strong safety culture.
